Taleban Threaten Voters
Growing threats from the Taleban have led many voters across Afghanistan to say they will not participate in the September18 parliamentary election.
In the troubled Wardak province south of Kabul, the Taleban have threatened to kill people if they leave their houses on election day.
“The majority of people from our village will not go to voting centres on the day of elections,” said Mohammad Fahim, a resident of Wardak.
Fahim added that, as a result of the threats, a polling station in a school near his house has not opened, few campaign posters have appeared, and no one is campaigning in the Wardak bazaar.
While Afghan forces, the Afghan police and NATO troops have made election security their top priority, 938 of 6835 polling centres have been closed.
