CPC, ACN Alliance Talks Finally Collapse
It is all over for the widely publicised alliance between the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).
The alliance was aimed at defeating the Peoples Democratic Party in Saturday’s presidential election.
Bunmi Aborisade, Convener, Ribadu for Nigeria Coalition said ACN will now go it alone, come April 16.
The alliance had been threatened by disagreement over who should step down between Muhammadu Buhari and Nuhu Ribadu.
ACN won seats in last Saturday’s National Assembly elections in all the country’s geo-political zones. It had the most in south-west. But the party performed poorly in Adamawa, northern home state of Ribadu.
CPC on the hand did not win seats beyond the North. It however did very well Katsina, Buhari’s home state.
ACN argued that its better performance in the National Assembly elections should earn it the presidential ticket of the alliance. CPC countered that Buhari was still a more popular presidential candidate than Ribadu.
Human Rights Lawyer, Femi Falana said the alliance failed because it was not anchored on concrete programs other than the mere wish to dislodge the PDP.
Other observers say the CPC and the ACN ought to have merged before the campaigns started.
The full effect of the failure of the alliance will only be seen on Saturday. But an analyst argued that opposition votes might be divided to the possible advantage of Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP.
