Recent remarks that President Pervez Musharraf has made about Afghanistan indicate that major changes are afoot in Pakistan, the former head of Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence, General Hamid Gul, said on March 7. The two countries are engaged in a war of words about cross-border infiltration by insurgents. The Afghans accuse Pakistan of harbouring terrorist cells, while Islamabad has countered by saying Afghanistan is fomenting unrest in border areas of Pakistan. Gul added that Musharraf’s remarks show that his recent talks with US president George Bush were unsuccessful. Gul predicted that the United States will “replace” Musharraf in this year’s election.
