Andijan Gets New Mayor
Abdulhamid Nishonov was appointed mayor of the city of Andijan in eastern Uzbekistan at a July 4 meeting of the city council. Nishonov, 50, comes from Andijan region, and was previously an executive in a Tashkent business.
He was nominated by Andijan region’s current governor, Ahmad Usmanov.
Abdumajid Egamberdiev, the former mayor of the city, where governmental troops opened fire on a peaceful demonstration in May 2005, died of heart attack in January 2007.
