Tajik Language Raises Online Profile

The first online Tajik-English dictionary reflects a shift away from reliance on Russian as an intermediary language.

The dictionary is intended to give students easier, and more direct access to foreign texts. The dearth of language books has meant that people commonly find out what a Tajik word is in Russian, and then look up the foreign-language translation of the Russian word.

The audio programme, in Russian and Tajik, went out on national radio stations in Tajikistan, as part of IWPR project work funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
