Ethnic Russian Nominated for Presidency

On April 27, the non-government Human Rights Alliance of Uzbekistan nominated its fourth candidate for December’s presidential election, Valery Galkin, a 56-year-old ethnic Russian who is a human rights activist in Tashkent. Galkin’s electoral programme platform includes reform of the judiciary and law-enforcement system, bilingualism and dual nationality. The three other human rights activists nominated by the alliance have repeatedly said that the current president Islam Karimov has no right to stand in December, and that he has not been Uzbekistan’s legitimate president since January, when his seven-year term officially expired.
