The trial of opposition activists accused of creating disturbances on election day has been delayed for a second time.
Rita Borbukeeva reports from Balykchi in northern Kyrgyzstan, where a dozen opposition members face charges of affray and “attempting to seize power”, after clashing with police during a demonstration on the day of the presidential election, July 23.
The court postponed the trial session because some of the accused had been let out on bail and failed to turn up; defence lawyers counter that no one informed them of the date of the hearing.
Some of the accused have claimed they were mistreated by police, an allegation the latter deny. Defence lawyers also say they have been denied full access to testimony of witnesses other than their own clients.
The trial is now set for September 11.
