Reporter Shahodat Saidnazarova says communal bins are overflowing and some people just dump household rubbish by the side of the road. There appears to no way of deterring them from doing so.

City residents interviewed by the reporter said standards were falling and people just didn’t care about creating a mess in their own city.

These days a lot of the rubbish consists of non-degradable plastics. Tajikistan has no recycling plants yet, and a plan to build incinerators at waste dumps could get the country into trouble because of the environmental conventions it has signed up to.
