Residents of the Badakhshan region are relieved to see the back of former governor Alimamad Niezmamadov, who was replaced by Kodir Kosimov on February 20. Many locals are pleased that Kosimov is reinstating officials dismissed during his predecessor’s 13 years in office. Badakhshan is a strategically important region which occupies much of the eastern half of Tajikistan.
