Imo State: Governorship Victory Boosts APGA Membership
This follows the victory of APGA’s candidate, Rochas Okorocha, in last Friday’s governorship election.
Most of the new members are said to be defectors from other political parties that lost out in the governorship race.
APGA’s Director of publicity, Ifeanacho Oguejiofor, explained that the party exhausted its membership forms over the weekend due to the sudden upsurge in membership.
Apart from cross-carpeting politicians, Oguejiofor said ordinary south-easterners, also called Ibos, are joining APGA in droves.
“APGA has become the peoples’ political movement, Oguejiofor said.
APGA was founded by Emeka Ojukwu, the retired army general, who led a failed secession bid by eastern Nigeria in the late sixties.
Imo state is not new to high profile political defections.
The defeated governor, Ikedi Ohakim, was originally elected on the platform of the Progressive Party Alliance (PPA), before moving to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Political observers are already wondering if Okorocha, the APGA governor-elect will toe his predecessor’s path.
