A gathering of around 150 religious scholars or ulema in the southeastern province of Khost on January 16 ruled that acts of terrorism were contrary to Islam. Participants in the meeting said people should identify terrorists and reveal their whereabouts. The ulema passed a six-point resolution describing terrorist acts and opium poppy cultivation as actions counter to the holy religion of Islam. Khost provincial governor Merajuddin Patan attended the gathering. An explosion in Khost province on January 15, one day before the ulema meeting, killed one person and injured several others.
