Turkmen Diplomats to Return to Baku
Turkmenistan’s embassy in Azerbaijan will reopen soon, according to Azerbaijani media reports. An agreement to resume cooperation after a seven-year stand-off was reached during a phone conversation between the presidents of the two countries in mid-March. Relations between the two Caspian states broke down completely in 1999 over a dispute about an oil and gas deposit in the Caspian Sea. The Turkmen authorities closed their embassy in the capital of Azerbaijan in 2001, ostensibly due to “financial difficulties”.
