Ivan is 17 and for nearly half of his life has lived through war. Born in Makiivka, in Ukraine’s eastern region of Donetsk, he was eight when Russian proxies took control of the region. The family moved to Dnipro, but with Russia’s full-scale invasion of February 24, 2022, conflict overtook his life again.

Ivan is one of hundreds of thousands of teenagers whose lives have been shaped by Russia’s confrontation with Ukraine. Teens tend to vanish behind the headlines: they are old enough to understand, but not old enough to get involved.
