The official Tishreen newspaper lambasted recent Israeli policies, saying that the Jewish state was currently not a suitable counterpart with which to contract peace.

Columnist Ezeldin al-Darqish wrote in a July 2 op-ed piece that the peace process was “moving backwards”, arguing that Israel was thwarting efforts by Europeans, Americans and Russians to reach peace in the region.

There is no hope to achieve peace as long as Israel continues to build settlements in Palestinian territories, the author said.

He criticised western powers for failing to put pressure on Israel to offer a “fair” settlement to the Middle East conflict.

He said that Arabs, especially Syria, would not delude themselves into thinking that they were near reaching peace, and added that Israel was not a potential partner for security and stability in the region.
