The state agency in charges of roads and transport is making progress on the Suwayda-Damascus road, and has finished ten kilometres so far. The new road runs between the southern city of Suwayda and the capital, and is expected to help ease the flow of traffic and improve road safety, the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency reported on January 21.

In April 2005, 31 people were killed and 44 injured on the old road between the two cities.

The road is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2009, at a cost of 1.5 billion lira, or29 million US dollars.
