Poroshenko Well Ahead of Timoshenko in Ukraine Opinion Poll
In the May 25 presidential election, 21 per cent of Ukrainians would back Petro Poroshenko and 11 per cent Yulia Timoshenko, according to a survey which Rating Group Ukraine has conducted for the International Republican Institute.
Another ten per cent were prepared to vote for Vitali Klitschko [since withdrawn from race], six per cent for Serhiy Tihipko, while Anatoly Hritsenko, Petro Simonenko, Oleh Tyahnybok and Mikhail Dobkin would get three per cent each.
Eight per cent of respondents said they would vote against all the candidates, while 14 per cent do not plan to vote and 13 per cent are undecided.
Once data for Crimea is removed, Poroshenko comes out with 22 per cent, Timoshenko 12 per cent, Klitschko 11 per cent, Serhiy Tihipko six per cent, and Hritsenko, Simonenko, Tyahnybok and Dobkin three per cent each.
The survey indicated that in a second round, Poroshenko would get 36 per cent of the vote if pitted against Timoshenko, who would get 15 per cent (38 and 16 per cent respectively minus the Crimean vote); Timoshenko 30 per cent in a run-off against Tihipko, who would get 13 per cent (32 and 13 per cent respectively minus the Crimean vote); Poroshenko 46 per cent against ten per cent for Tihipko (48 and 11 per cent respectively).
Forty-eight per cent of respondents plan to vote in the presidential election, and 31 per cent are more likely to vote than not. Not counting Crimean voters, 51 per cent say they will take part. In both data sets, five per cent are undecided about whether to vote.
The survey was held in every region of Ukraine including Crimea on March 14-26, and 1,200 Ukrainian nationals over the age of 18 were questioned. The error of margin is put at not more than 2.8 per cent.
