Children's Home Remains Under Scrutiny

As IWPR reported in January, the privately-run Meerim Bulagy children’s home in the Tup district was accused of allowing children in its care to be converted to Islam against their relatives’ wishes. Now allegations have emerged that some children from the home were sent abroad illegally.



Human rights groups are concerned about the school and an official commission has been sent in to check up on the children, although doctors say they have found nothing untoward with their health.



The head of the children’s home, Gulnara Degenbaeva, denies all the allegations, accusing her critics of trying to get the institution closed just so they can grab the land.
