Leaky Gas Containers Being Sold

Syria Media Report, 08-Aug-08

The official newspaper Tishreen warned on August 5 that many of the gas canisters people use for cooking and heating are dangerously leaky and potentially lethal.

In addition, some of the gas canisters on sale are half-empty.

The Syrian oil ministry says sub-standard containers are smuggled in from neighbouring countries, and it has asked the customs service to crack down on such illegal imports, and the interior ministry to stop unlicensed vendors from selling them.

Tishreen said little has been done to stop the sub-standard canisters, with distributors trying to shift the blame onto the shops that sell them.
