According to the pro-government newspaper Al-Watan, rockets launched at northern Israel from Lebanese territory on January 8 were fired by an extremist group.

The newspaper quoted what it called “high-level security sources” as saying investigations into the incident pointed to a Lebanese extremist group which had limited military capacity but could be trying to forge links with al-Qaeda.

The newspaper added that the attack could not have taken place without indirect backing from Hezbollah, which controls much of south Lebanon. Although Hezbollah had denied involvement, that did not mean that the party had not tacitly approved the attack, Al-Watan said.
