Grand opening for Afghan parliament

The Kabul Times is a state-run paper published in English every other day.

Afghanistan is preparing for a grand ceremony for the opening of its first post-conflict parliament this month, an official said. Afghan defence ministry spokesman Mohammad Zahir Azimi said President Hamed Karzai will be joined by dignitaries from various foreign countries. Azimi did not give a date for the first session of parliament, but another official said it would be held on December 19. The 249-member lower house, dominated by former anti-Taleban warlords, was elected on September 18 in a key step in the transition to democracy.
