Press Ignores Hamas Relocation Reports

Syria Media Report, 04-Sep-08

The Syrian press this week failed to mention reports that Khaled Meshal, political leader of the Palestinian group Hamas, had left Damascus at the request of the authorities.

Reports that Meshal had left Syria for Sudan appeared in the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Rai on September 2, citing officials of the Palestinian Authority.

A Hamas official in Damascus denied the reports.

According to the Kuwaiti paper, Meshal was asked to relocate elsewhere under a secret deal designed to meet Israel’s demand for an end to Syrian support for Hamas.

Meshal has lived in Syria for the last decade.
