The Wolesi Jirga, the lower house of parliament, on May 17 postponed its vote of confidence on nominees proposed by the president to fill positions in the Supreme Court. Speaker Mohammad Yunous Qanuni said that delay was necessitated by the need to define a legal basis for the debate. Some of the nominees hold dual citizenship, which is barred by the constitution. In addition, the chief justice is over 80 and some members of parliament say he is too old for the post.
