The Association of Muslim Scholars officially announced it will boycott the upcoming elections and affirmed that it respects individual Iraqis' decisions to vote or not. Association secretary-general Muthanna Harith al-Dhari said members will not participate in elections held under occupation, and that the association will engage in Iraqi politics as soon as the (US-led) occupation forces withdraw. He asked all different groups in Iraq to adhere to the resolutions of Cairo conference. (The Arab League-sponsored conference was held last month in preparation for a national reconciliation conference in Iraq next year.)
