Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Nogaideli will arrive in Ashgabat on March 23 to discuss Turkmen gas imports with President Gurbanguly Berdymuhammedov. Tbilisi built up a debt of around 40 million US dollars buying Turkmen gas between 1994 and 1996, which may put Turkmenistan off a future deal. It is also unclear how the gas would be transported, given that the only large pipeline out of Turkmenistan goes via Russia, with which Georgia does not enjoy friendly relations. One option would be a gas-swap arrangement with Iran, which has borders with both countries.
