The Syrian Centre for Media and Freedom of Expression has expressed concern about the tight control of internet cafes.

In a statement issued on March 12, it said the security forces have been systematically monitoring each internet user. In order to obtain a license from the communications ministry, internet cafes have to keep daily logs of the names and addresses of customers, as well as the length of time they spend online.

The centre reported that 153 websites have been blocked in Syria.

It also accused the government of detaining internet users for expressing their opinions online, including blogger Tarek Biaysi.
