Kordic And Cerkez Trial To Start On 12 April

Tribunal Update 108: Last Week in The Hague (11-17 January, 1999)

Sunday, 17 January, 1999

In the dock will appear Dario Kordic, the highest political leader of HVO in Central Bosnia, and Mario Cerkez, commander of the Vitez HVO Brigade. Both Kordic and Cerkez surrendered themselves voluntarily to The Hague in October 1997 after allegedly receiving a guarantee from the Americans that their trial would begin within five months of their surrender.

They will however be waiting for a full 18 months - both because of the Tribunal's work overload and the fact that the indictment against them had in the meantime been amended and significantly added to.

Kordic and Cerkez will be tried by Trial Chamber III (Judge Richard May, presiding; Judge Mohamed Bennouna and Judge Patrick Lipton Robinson).
