In a major battle against insurgents on the outskirts of Najaf, Iraqi forces, backed by multi-lateral helicopters and jet fighters, killed 250 militants from Hilla, Amara, and Kut, said police colonel Ali Nomas. Political sources said the militants belonged to an unknown religious leader called Ahmad Hassani. Security sources said they aimed to kill four top Shia clerics: Ali al-Sistani, Ishaq al-Fayyadh, Basheer al-Najafi, and Mohammed Saieed al-Hakim.
