Local journalists in Khatlon and Sogd in Tajikistan are breathing a sigh of relief at the appointment of new regional leaders who are likely to curb the media than their predecessors. Ghaybullo Avzalov was confirmed as governor of the southern Khatlon region and Abduqohir Nozirov head of Sogd province in the north on February 27. Both men have been acting heads of these regions since December. Avzalov used to be a member of parliament and Nozirov is a former minister for water resources. Journalists said they were pleased both men followed their appointment by meeting the press. Nozirov appointed Ilhom Jamolov, head of the local independent news agency Varorud, as spokesman for his provincial administration.
