Niger State: Opposition parties no longer boycotting election
Opposition political parties in Niger State have said they are participating in Tuesday’s governorship polls, despite an earlier boycott threat.
Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) had wanted the election postponed because of the omission of the logos of two political parties - the Citizen Popular Party (CPP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The three Parties had initially rejected INEC’s proposed alternative of using the ballot papers set aside for a possible re-run if no clear winner emerges at the first ballot.
But the State chairman of Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Umaru Shuaibu said the Parties later agreed to proceed with the elections following assurance by the State’s INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Emmanuel Onucheyo, that the ballot papers would be serialized.
However, a spokesperson for the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, Adamu Aliyu, said his party is participating in the election under protest. Aliyu added that if the ANPP failed to contest it would have no basis to challenge the outcome should anything go wrong.
