Identify Issues

In consultation with local NGOs, journalists and media partners, IWPR identified a lack of public debate and information about critical issues facing the country’s under-reported rural regions.

Build Journalism

IWPR forged a national network of radio stations throughout Georgia to produce a programme called Accent. Nine radio journalists received specialised training in investigative journalism while they researched issues of relevance to their regions.

Report News

Accent aired weekly on partner radio stations in all Georgian regions and the capital. Reporters interviewed up to 50 respondents throughout the country for every programme, giving widespread voice to local people and concerns.

Raise Awareness

Accent raised public awareness of a wide range of issues — from the health and safety of internally displaced people (IDPs), to the economic problems faced by ethnic minorities and refugees from the region’s conflicts.

Make an Impact

The programmes were followed up by public forums and briefings for local and central government representatives. These contributed to increased dialogue between officials and local people. A number of Accent radio programmes, such as one on a TB epidemic, helped drive change.
