The Afghan health ministry is planning to establish diabetes treatment centres in six provinces this year. Centres will open in Kunduz, Nangarhar, Herat, Kandahar, Balkh and Jowzjan provinces. According to a recent survey conducted by the ministry, more than one million people across the country have been diagnosed with diabetes. Deputy Health Minister Dr Sadruddin Sahar said that since March 2005, the ministry has established four diabetes centres in Kabul at which approximately 500,000 people are undergoing treatment.He added that the World Diabetes Foundation is helping the ministry with funding to establish the centres.
