Checkpoints Increase Traffic Congestion

There is growing resentment at the increased number of checkpoints, which are obstructing traffic. Concrete roadblocks placed on bridges and main roads have led to long queues of cars. Not only do those waiting to pass have to endure hot summer temperatures, the delays mean their cars consume more petrol, a very expensive commodity these days. The deployment of security forces and the creation of more checkpoints is part of the second phase of the Baghdad security plan announced by Prime Minister Jawad al-Maliki. Some people say the plan has done nothing to stop terrorist bombings and suicide attacks.
