Mohammad Amin Abdullah, a resident of Sulaimaniyah, has launched a private lawsuit against Iraqi president Jalal Talabani dating back to the latter’s role as head of the then rebel Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, PUK, in the Eighties. Abdullah is seeking 25 million Iraqi dinars in compensation for foodstuffs that he says he supplied to the PUK in 1983. Abdullah’s lawyer Karwan Kamal said documents signed by the PUK existed to prove that the goods were delivered. No one appeared in court on Talabani’s behalf, and a court official said that if he chose not to appear or offer a defence, a decision would be reached in absentia.
