Unidentified men burned down three schools in the Nawa district of the southern province of Helmand on the night of January 27, officials said. Provincial police chief Abdul Rahman Saber said the schools, in the Mangal Zayee, Surkhdoz and Hazardast villages of Nawa district, were set on fire by the enemies of education. Books and other school property were also destroyed in the fire. No one has been arrested yet but the police have launched an investigation. About 20 schools have been set on fire by anti-government militias over the past 10 months.
