Even before votes in the Israeli parliamentary election had been counted, the Syrian media voiced gloom about the prospects for a peace deal between the two states.
The pro-government website Al-Jamal said on February 11 predicted the new government in Tel Aviv would try to impose peace on Syria, and would increase political pressure on Lebanon, which could lead to a new military standoff with Hezbollah.
The website said the election results were likely to kill any chance of a resumption in the informal negotiations between Israel and Syria.
In a February 11 opinion article in the pro-government newspaper Al-Watan, Isa al-Ayobi worried that even the United States might lose its influence over the peace process if right-wing candidate Avigdor Lieberman joined the centrist foreign minister Tzipi Livni in a governing coalition.
In a February 12 opinion piece in the state-backed Al-Thawra, Muhammad Ali Boza wrote that the only thing that is certain is that peace is a long way off.
