The defence ministry has uncovered a plot by the al-Qaeda organisation headed by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi to occupy the Green Zone, the protected area of Baghdad where the Iraqi government, the multi-national forces, and the United States and British embassies are located. Alaa Habeeb al-Safi, the minister of civil society affairs, said the defence minister Sadoon al-Dulaimi had uncovered a plot to used letters of authorisation forged in his own name to allow 421 individuals to join the forces in charge of protecting the area. These individuals planned to seize control of the whole area of the Green Zone and capture all the people working there.
