Statements from United States officials on the Middle East peace process appear to contradict those made by President Barack Obama, an April 25 article in the state-run Tishreen newspaper said.

Tishreen columnist Omar Jaftali noted that while President Obama has said he favours a two-state solution, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on April 23 that Washington would not deal with any Palestinian unity government that failed to meet international principles for peace, such as halting violence against Israel and recognising that state’s right to exist.

“If the government complies with it, that is what we’re looking for,” said Clinton.

Jaftali interpreted remarks of this kind as a sign that the US is divided over how to proceed with the peace process, adding that he thought Secretary of State Clinton was seeking to favour the interests of Israelis over Palestinians.
