Uzbek president Islam Karimov’s current visit to Brazil is one of very few foreign trips he has made in recent years.

During his May 27-28 visit, Karimov is scheduled to meet Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and sign a series of bilateral political, trade, economic and cultural agreements.

According to NBCentral Asia experts, Tashkent’s attempt to engage with Brazil is motivated by a desire to attract investment.

“There is much to learn from the Brazilian experience concerning economic management, since it is a successfully developing country,” said Tashpulat Yoldashev, an Uzbek political analyst based abroad. “In additions, Brazilian oil companies may want to conduct exploration work in Uzbekistan.”

Karimov’s last visit beyond the former Soviet Union was to Slovenia in March 2005, just before the Andijan violence and the European Union sanctions that ensued.
