President Jalal Talabani affirmed that the Kurds support a national unity government and respect the three candidates vying for the prime minister's post. He noted that (vice-president) Adil Abdul-Mahdi is closer to Kurds than the other two candidates (current prime minister Ibrahim al-Ja'afari and former prime minister Ayad Allawi.) He added that it is constitutionally possible for Shia and Kurdish parties to form a coalition government, but the Kurds will go to any lengths for Sunni groups to participate. Talabani added that in his (expected) second term, he will try to activate the constitutional and federal courts, to free the media from government domination and to solve the issue of Kirkuk.
