The outgoing Iraqi president Jalal Talabani met with US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice and (British foreign minister) Jack Straw. He discussed the political negotiations the different Iraqi blocs are carrying out to form the Iraqi government. The guests, who arrived in Iraq on an unannounced visit, praised Talabani's efforts in forming a strong Iraqi government approved by all slates. He pressed Iraqi politicians to speed up forming the government to avoid civil war. Sectarianism has risen significantly following the bombing of the Samarra shrines (on February 22.)
