Al-Baath, the newspaper of the ruling Baath party, reports that the Damascus authorities are to grant residents of the Golan Heights – occupied by Israel – the right to Syrian national identity numbers and cards . The move is designed to give Golan residents more of a connection with Syria, and counter the ID cards that the Israeli authorities are issuing.

Politicians from Golan in Syria told Al-Baath that this was an important decision in support of the struggle against Israeli occupation. Member of parliament Ismail Maree said the government had shown its determination to “restore our rights and our occupied land”, Medhat Salih, responsible for Golan affairs in the government, said the idea was to reinforce Golan being part of Syria, and give residents ID cards to prove they are Syrian wherever they go in the world.
