Returning Officer Abandons Duty Post - Alleges N10m Bribe

The National Assembly election in Anambra Central Senatorial district went into a stalemate on Sunday as the returning officer, Mr. Alex Anene, abandoned his duty post when his counterparts were busy declaring results across the state.

Mr. Anene told journalists that he absconded following an offer of a huge bribe comprising Ten Million Naira, a duplex and scholarships for his children to persuade him to declare a particular candidate as winner of the senatorial seat.

He said he was a staff of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, but would neither say however, who offered the bribe nor who he was asked to return as the winner of the election, with threats to his life if he failed to do so.

Former Information and Communications Minister, Professor Dora Akunyili and former Governor of Anambra State Mr. Chris Ngige are the front runners for the Anambra Central Senatorial seat.

INEC was yet to confirm the story at press time.
