Pro-Government Website Denies Report of Shots Fired in Golan

Syria Media Report, 15-Jan-09

A pro-government website, Syria Echoes, has denied a January 11 report that Israeli troops in the Golan Heights came under small-arms fire from Syria.

Senior Syrian officials did not comment on the report. The governor of al-Qunaytirah close to the border said he was unaware of any incident.

Political analysts told the website that the Israeli claims could be a provocation or an attempt to draw greater international attention to the border dispute.

The Israeli Defence Force filed a complaint with a United Nations monitoring group in the area.
