Politician Says Baathist Coup Foiled

London-based Asharq al-Awsat is a pro-Saudi independent paper issued daily.

US forces stopped an attempted Baathist overthrow of the government of Noori al-Maliki, according to Mithal al-Alusi, the al-Umma party chief and National Assembly member. "US forces discovered the plan, informed the Iraqi government and arrested some of those involved in the coup attempt," he explained. He said Baathists were behind the alleged plot.
