North-West makes some difference for opposition

The supplementary governorship election in Imo State took place on Friday amid protests by the electorate over the late arrival of materials

and what they called attempts to manipulate the outcome.

Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mike Igini, who was drafted to Imo State in place of his suspended counterpart, had a difficult time calming down angry voters.

The voters complained that black and white ballot paper was distributed instead of the coloured ones used in the previous elections. They also claimed that the result sheets were different. But an official of the Independent National Electoral Commission explained that the materials for the supplementary election, including the ballot boxes, were customised.

Heavy rainfall in some areas threatened to affect the turnout but in the end accreditation and voting took place and the collation of results proceeded into the night under the close watch of electoral officers, party agents, observers and security personnel.
