The New York Times has apologised for accusing Engineer Aref Noorzai of drug trafficking, in a report from its Kabul correspondent in Kabul. The accusation appeared in the November 19, 2004 issue of the paper. In a letter of apology, the newspaper said its report should not be seen as incriminating Noorzai, who is now first deputy speaker of the Wolesi Jirga, but at the time the article was published was minister for tribal affairs.
