New Deputy Premier to Look After Mining

Kuvandyk Sanakulov, director-general of the Almalyk mining and smelting combine, has been appointed deputy prime minister of Uzbekistan, with special responsibility for the metals and mining sector. Commentators say an additional post of deputy prime minister was created because mineral extraction is becoming a major priority. Uzbekistan recently concluded a number of big contracts involving uranium sales to Japan and Russian investment in several key mining companies.
