Wednesday, 27 April, 2011

Tuesday’s election in Edo State was largely peaceful and orderly although there were reports of electoral irregularities, such as intimidation and ballot box snatching. The governor of Edo State Comrade Adams Oshiomole, confirmed this, at his hometown Iyamho, in Etsako West Local Government Area. He however conveyed his satisfaction with the work of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega:

The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dr Pius Odubu, who cast his ballot at the Iyobosa primary school polling centre in his village, Urhomehe, was also full of praise for Jega:

A former Minister of Foreign Affairs and party chieftain of the opposition Action Congress of Nigeria, Chief Tom Ikimi complained about the use of money to lure voters, but nevertheless gave a pass mark to Professor Jega and INEC:

Chief Ikimi’s allegation of financial inducement was dismissed as baseless by Mr Felix Imoisili, a party leader of the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party, (PDP) and two-time Chairman of Igueben Local Government Area, who voted at the same polling centre as Ikimi:
