Major-General Suhrob Kasymov, one of the most famous pro-government commanders of in Tajikistan’s 1992-97 civil war, resigned as commander of a special task-force brigade, part of the interior ministry, on March 14. Many NBCentralAsia observers view Kasymov’s departure as symbolising the final transition to peace. Most of the well-known military commanders of the civil war, including opposition commander Mahmadruzi Iskandarov as well as pro-government figures like Ghaffor Mirzoev and Yakub Salimov – are now in prison.
