Syrian officials met the head of the Japanese International Cooperation Agency to discuss potential infrastructure projects this week, SANA news agency reported.

Deputy prime minister for economic affairs Abdullah al-Dardari talked to agency president Sadako Ogata about the possibility of Japanese funding for energy, water, sewage, medical and factory projects.

Ogata also met President Bashar al-Assad on March 12 to discuss the agency’s environmental and development projects, as well as the impact that Iraqi refugees are having on Syria.

The Japanese International Cooperation Agency has 60 experts in Syria working to improve agriculture and water management. In the past two years, it has also contributed funds for solid waste treatment plants in Syria.
